earlier this month we got on a call with brett farrell, founder of territory run co, expecting to talk about the brand. we ended up talking about surfing, salt lake city, and what it means to know when you have enough.

brett has been running the portland company for twelve years, and if you've worn a territory cap on a trail anywhere in the pacific northwest, you already know the lone fir on the front. what you might not know is how it started: a fall 2013 road trip, a mountain outside salt lake city, and brett pulling over to run a trail for no reason other than it was there. he came home and started the company.

before that, he was working the floor at a portland running shop, and one thing kept nagging at him. customers would come in and say they ran fifteen miles a week, then quickly add that they weren't runners. brett hated the disclaimer. he thought the industry had earned it by selling pain and competition to people who mostly just wanted to feel good moving. his counterexample was surfing.

the moment on the call that neither of us expected was when the conversation turned to business. after 2020, a wave of new running brands showed up, and brett felt the pressure every small founder feels: more shorts, more tees, more everything, just to stay visible. instead, he went the other way. one thoughtful product every six months. a small team on purpose. a clear idea of what enough looks like. no apology for stopping there. it's not the founder story you usually hear, and honestly it's the one most of us would sign up for.

every territory cap carries a single fir tree. we asked brett about it after the story went live, and his answer explained the brand better than anything else could.

across the pacific northwest you'll find a lone fir standing on a hillside, weathering storms and seasons year after year. for territory it became a reminder of the kind of running they're after, in brett's words: “not proving. not chasing. just staying rooted and continuing to show up.” it's on every cap as a reminder to keep going.

if you want the same idea in ninety seconds, territory put out a short film last winter called lovely day for a run. no rise and grind, no splits, just a reminder that nobody has ever come back from a run wishing they hadn't gone. worth the minute and a half.

battle of the run clubs · season 1

two weeks left in august, and the miles race has a runaway leader.

meshingomesia track club out of marion, indiana sits at 1,277 miles month to date, more than 300 clear of the jeff walker fan club at 952 and bank of boston at 933. cameron dean balser is carrying a lot of that, 419 miles by himself in sixteen days.

vert is a different story. the wetter bandits out of seattle have 111,430 feet, nearly double the wet bandits in second at 59,456, with ross michell and alex wang each over 36,000 feet on their own. the seattle clubs are climbing, the indiana clubs are covering ground, and neither side seems interested in the other's game.

season 1 closes august 31. top miles club and top vert club take the podium.

a few of you have asked when the season actually cuts off. runs must be started by 11:59pm on august 31 to count. a couple of you have asked whether you could start a midnight hundred at 11:59pm and have it count. sure, we guess. go for it. it's all for fun.
