big's backyard ultra · world team championship
saturday at 7am central, about a thousand
runners in nearly seventy countries stepped off
at the exact same second. three days later, some
of them still haven't stopped.
the format belongs to lazarus lake. run 4.167
miles, a yard, inside an hour. rest with
whatever time is left. toe the line again at the
top of the next hour. repeat until one person is
left. there's no set distance and no finish
line, only a loop and a clock.
it started in 2011 as a race named after a dog
on a farm in bell buckle, tennessee. in the past
year, 55,000 people ran a backyard ultra in 82
countries, and laz will tell you nobody is more
surprised by that than he is.
