battle of the run clubs season 1 closed at 11:59:59 pm on august 31. it is september and we still don't have a winner, because a run that started at 11:59:01 is still a run.

running might be the only sport where the clock can expire while the event continues. everywhere else the whistle goes, the scoreboard is final, everyone goes home and argues about it. we wrote a deadline and then watched it fail to apply to the people who were already moving.

a friend of ours is out in the alps right now on something that will take him days. we've been checking on him the way you check on a slow storm. he was fine yesterday. he might not be fine tonight. we don't know yet, and the not knowing is the entire appeal.

that's the thing long distance running has that most of the sport doesn't. a plot. a start, a middle where it goes bad, a rally at 30k or 70k, a night, and a real question about whether the person makes it. a 5k is 30 minutes and you know the shape of it before the gun. it can be the best day of your life. it's still one act, nonstop action.

we don't think this is a trail thing. people follow backyard ultras and coast to coast attempts and someone running the length of a state or country, and plenty of that happens on pavement. duration is what makes a run worth following, not terrain. the olympic 100m final will always have more people watching than utmb. it just doesn't have a second act.

the long way in

it's september, which for most of you means the build starts this week. the november marathon you signed up for while sipping a cold drink on the patio is now a real thing with real long runs in it.

builds work for the same reason a hundred miler is worth watching. they're long enough to have a middle. the first two weeks feel great and prove nothing. the trouble arrives later, quietly, on a tuesday morning when the fatigue is real and you have another double digit run ahead.

speedland released the RX:PNW this week, and it's built for exactly this stretch of the calendar. a trail company making a road shoe for the training blocks that sit between mountain seasons. same trick as the rest of their line, pull the carbon plate and the drop-in midsole and it's a daily trainer, put them back for race day. the foam is an uncompressed supercritical build and it's the springiest thing they've made. boa closure, scratch rubber outsole for pavement.

one honest note before you click. the removable midsole means no custom insoles, so if you run in orthotics this isn't your shoe. $299 direct.

common interests

jonathan levitt wrote a good piece this week about the brand circus around utmb in chamonix, a town of 9,000 that has to absorb something like 100,000 people during race week, and that just elected a mayor who has started saying so out loud. the useful part is the test he lands on, borrowed from paul neutzner at the brand on: does a brand showing up somewhere enrich the place or extract from it. this one is worth reading if you care how companies behave when they arrive in a valley that didn't ask for them. jonathan's piece discloses partnerships with two of the brands he covers, which is more than most people manage.

battle cry

we're not calling season 1 yet.

the rule says runs must start by 11:59pm on august 31 to count, and some of you read that carefully. who's still out there? 👀

full standings, both podiums, and what the winning clubs are taking home come out next week. what we can say now: 105 runners, 25 clubs, 20,516 miles and 835,538 feet logged in one month.

that's it. the first few weeks are the easy ones. what happens next is when the story gets written.

if you dig this, forward it to a running friend. if you don't, hit reply and tell us what you'd rather see.
